How I Kept My Husband Involved With My Pregnancy While He Was Away

When I first found out that I was pregnant, Justin was still at training halfway across the country. We were so excited! But at the same time I was also kind of sad because Justin and I weren’t together. I took my pregnancy test alone, I went to the doctor alone *except for when my Mom joined me- thank you Mama*, I found out our gender alone. I felt sad not just for me, but for Justin. He was only seeing everything through video clips I sent, pictures and phone calls after each appointment. It wasn’t until I called him after my last appointment before our move (right before he was going to come home) that I told him that we were going to have a boy- that I think it REALLY hit him.

Justin said that he really loved the way I kept him involved and that it was the next best thing to being together.

Here is what I did:

  • During each appointment, I asked my doctor if it was okay if I recorded the ultrasound. I took videos and send them to him after each appointment.
  • I sent him updates each day and week from the apps that I have been using (Ovia and What to Expect are my favorites.)
  • I called him after each appointment if he wasn’t in a training or class and updated him on what the doctor said.
  • I sent him bumpdate pictures! Even when I barely had a bump, I still sent them!

Since our move, Justin has been able to attend almost all of our appointments. We are so lucky because the leadership in his squadron have been very understanding and helpful. I try to schedule all of our appointments for around his lunch time so he isn’t missing too much and isn’t forced to take any leave.

I am so thankful that we are together through the rest of this journey. And I am so thankful that he will be here when our son is born. I know that this isn’t the case for a lot of military families and my heart breaks for them. But if I have learned anything since becoming a military wife, it is that military wives are some of the strongest women on this planet. They are resilient and brave. And military wives turned into mamas? Well they are real life superheroes.
